About the group (including what is it, history, and how to join)
What is CBGG?
CBGG (Confidence Building Girls Group) is a group that meets once a week during lunch to talk about anything. No matter who you are or what you do you may join. So far, this group is only at Century Middle School. When you sign up we will put you in a group of six to eight girls. You'll meet with a female teacher during your lunch period. The teacher facilitating your group will tell you what days you are meeting on. This is a group where you can speak your mind and talk about anything. This is a safe group. We have a confidentiality agreement you will sign your first day in the group. This is just to make sure that if something comes up that is private, people don't go telling others about. We want this to feel like a family.
Century Middle School's eighth grade CBGG is facilitated by Mrs. Hillier (English teacher) and Mrs. Simonton (school counselor). This group meets every Tuesday (starting April 28, 2015), in Mrs. Hillier's room during sixth hour, first lunch. There's no fee required to join. We'd love to see you at CBGG!
History (how CBGG came to be)
CBGG was first a research project of FLL (First Lego League) robotics team Caught in a Brainstorm. They are a second year team of all eighth grade girls that attend Century Middle School. For the 2015 season, their research project was to answer the question "How can we improve the way ________ learns about ________". They decided to fill in the blanks as "How can we improve the way girls learn about positive self image?" and came up with a theoretical CBGG as their solution. Research presented them with shocking statistics such as "only 2% of women think they're beautiful", which made them realize the importance of the groups. Not to mention, all the girls on the team could relate about how great it is being able to talk to peers who are also experiencing the challenges about growing up.
At their Regional Tournament, Caught in a Brainstorm won first in their division, and were one of the 73 out of 621 FLL teams in MN to advance to the MN State Tournament. At the State Tournament, they won first in Creative Presentation, and placed in the top seven in the state in Research Quality, took second place in Core Values, and placed in the top seven in the state in Programming. They qualified to compete in the FLL World Championships in St. Louis (with teams from all over the globe, such as China, Egypt, and Australia)! To prepare for the World Tournament, they implemented their theoretical solution with a pilot group, and found out it successful! :)
